Benefits

The City of Redwood City is pleased to offer a wide range of benefit programs to our employees. The benefit package offered by the City is both comprehensive and competitive. This summary provides a brief overview of the available benefits to eligible employees. Eligible employees are full-time and part-time employees working a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Retirement

CalPERS

  • Membership in the California Public Employee’s Retirement System (CalPERS).
  • Single highest year formula.
  • 3%@50 – Fire
  • 3%@50 –Police
  • 2.7%@55 – Miscellaneous

Health

Medical

  • All plans administered by CalPERS.
  • Choice of 2 HMO’s and 2 PPO’s.
  • City pays all or part of monthly premium.

Dental

  • City pays monthly premiums for employees and their qualified dependents. Pro-rated for part-time employees.

Vision

  • City pays monthly premiums for employees’ and their qualified dependents. Pro-rated for part-time employees.

Flexible Benefit Plan (Cafeteria Plan)

  • Allows employees to contribute Tax-Free income for
    • Medical Premiums
    • Health Care Reimbursement ($8,000.00 Annual Maximum)
    • Dependent Care Reimbursement ($5,000.00 Annual Maximum)

Employee Wellness

Employee Assistance Plan (EAP)

  • Licensed counselors provide confidential consultation and referrals for:
    • Emotional and personal issues
    • Legal concerns
    • Financial issues
    • Marital and Family Relations
    • Child and Eldercare services

Up to 3 consultations per incident per year are provided free of charge for employees’ and their eligible dependents.

AFLAC – All AFLAC plans are optional voluntary plans that are paid 100% by employees by standard payroll deduction.

  • Dental – Provides additional dental coverage.
  • Personal Cancer Protector Plan – Provides additional coverage for covered individuals, when diagnosed with cancer.

Employee Fitness
Several City facilities offer weight rooms, some at no cost, and others for a fee, to ensure a healthy lifestyle.

Income Protection

  • Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance
    • Basic Plan – Monthly premiums paid by the City.
    • Optional Plan – Additional coverage may be purchased by employee, up to a maximum of one and a half times the annual salary.
  • Long Term Disability (LTD)
    • Basic Plan – Monthly premiums are paid by the City.
    • Optional Plan – Additional coverage may be purchased by employee, up to a maximum of one and a half times the annual salary.
  • AFLAC
    • Personal Recovery Plus – Provides additional coverage due to hospitalization for several medical issues.
    • Personal Accident Expense Plus – Provides additional disability income.

Savings Plans

  • Deferred Compensation Plans
    All regular employees may voluntarily contribute to any of the following four plans:

    • CalPERS 457
    • National Deferred
    • Aetna – ING
    • ICMA

401(a) Plan
The PARS Defined Contribution Retirement Enhancement Plan is available to Executive Level Managers only.

Paid Time Off

  • Vacation
    • Accrued bi-weekly. May be used after 6 months of service.
  • Sick Leave
    • Accrued at the rate of 1 day per month.
  • Bereavement Leave
    • Employees may be absent with pay for up to three (3) consecutive work days (or more if travel over 300 miles is required.)
  • Personal Business Leave
    • Two days of Leave are available to most employees to perform personal business.
  • In-Lieu Hours
    • Available to Executive Level Managers only.
  • Donated Time
    • Employees can apply for donated time when due to a catastrophic situation they have run out of paid time off.
    • Employees donate up to ten percent (10%) or more with Department Head approval of their own accrued vacation leave, in lieu hours or administrative (floating) holiday balance to the employee in need of paid time off.
  • Holidays
    The City provides paid holidays as listed below for most employees. Certain positions do require employees to work on holidays. Holidays may include:
    • New Year’s Day
    • Martin Luther King Jr. Day (observed the third Monday in January)
    • Washington’s Birthday (observed the third Monday in February)
    • Memorial Day (observed the last Monday in May)
    • Independence Day
    • Labor Day (observed the first Monday in September)
    • Veteran’s Day
    • Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving
    • Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
    • New Year’s Eve
    • Administrative/Floating Holiday

Miscellaneous

Educational Expense Reimbursement
Reimbursement is available for job-related courses taken as part of an accredited institution’s degree program or for professional development workshops or seminars. Full and Part-time employees are eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of tuition, registration fees, books and supplies.

Mileage Reimbursement
Employees may be reimbursed for travel requested and authorized by the City.
