Redwood City Seeking Volunteer Guides for School Groups’ Downtown Historic Tours
Redwood City , CA – April 14, 2008 - Redwood City’s diverse, proud heritage and history are reflected in many of our community’s buildings, with some great examples right in our Downtown area. These beautiful historic sites – the Lathrop House, the old County Courthouse/San Mateo County History Museum, and the Fox Theater – are all important parts of our community’s history. Here’s a chance for community members to help pass this historic legacy along to the next generation.
The City is seeking volunteers to help groups of Redwood City seventh graders on their tours of these historic landmark buildings Downtown . Anyone that appreciates architecture and enjoys beautiful historic buildings, and has just a couple of hours (or more!) of time available during the tour dates, is invited and encouraged to bring their enthusiasm and volunteer for this fun and gratifying project.
Assisted by teachers, the volunteers will lead a class through the itinerary of visiting these three buildings. This tour program has been offered every year for the last 14 years, to rave reviews from kids, teachers, and parents. For the volunteers, it 's easy, the topic is fascinating, they get to go on docent-hosted tours of these National Register-listed buildings, and the kids are great fun! And, a free kids’ lunch of hot dog, chips, and a drink is included.
There are four available tour dates: May 20 th, 22 nd, 28 th, and 30 th – volunteers can be tour guides for one tour on one day, or several tours over several days. Each tour lasts about an hour-and-a-half, and they start at various times from 9 am to 12:30 pm. Interested volunteers can contact the chair of the Redwood City Historic Resources Advisory Committee, Ken Rolandelli by phone at (650) 368-0805 or e-mail: kenrolandelli@aol.com.
