Redwood City Announces Appointment of New Fire Chief
Redwood City, CA - September 23rd, 2008 - City Manager Peter Ingram is pleased to announce the appointment of James F. Skinner to the position of Redwood City Fire Chief. Mr. Skinner’s appointment comes after serving as Interim Fire Chief for the last nine months, filling the vacancy upon the departure last year of former chief Gerry Kohlmann.
Chief Skinner has been with the Redwood City Fire Department for a remarkable 26 years, since May, 1982. He was promoted to Captain in 1990, and then Battalion Chief in 1998. As Interim Chief, he has proven his high-level leadership and management abilities, overseeing an annual budget of $17 million and a staff of 70.
“Chief Skinner has earned a reputation for professionalism and dedication, and he’s an admired leader in the Redwood City Fire Department, as well as within the regional fire service,” said City Manager Peter Ingram. “The work he’s done in the area of emergency preparedness, public education, and particularly as the interim chief, convinced me that he’s the right person to move the Fire Department forward.”
Noting his own great enthusiasm for his new position, Chief Skinner said “I’m thrilled to be part of this wonderful organization and to have the opportunity to continue the Fire Department’s tradition of excellence and service to the community of Redwood City.”
Chief Skinner will be sworn in on September 26th at 10 am at Fire Station Nine on Marshall Street.
